This excellent steakhouse in the heart of Maidstone offers a dining experience you won’t easily forget. With a theme based around King Henry VIII and set specifically at the pinnacle of Tudor extravagance, Flaming Henry’s serves lavish portions of excellent cuisine in an authentic 15th-Century setting. England, during the reign of King Henry VIII, is thought to have been a romantic and exciting place, filled with picturesque timber mansions, beautiful music, poetry and great feasts; this restaurant endeavours to capture and recreate the extravagant style and ambience of this bygone era with its mouthwatering food and enchanting atmosphere.

The modest black and white exterior sits quietly on the High Street, concealing the delights within. Step inside and you are presented with warm and inviting decor – rustic wood is used throughout, and the walls are adorned with swords and shields, adding to the Tudor effect. The elegant and considerately planned seating lends itself to an intimate meal as well as a lively banquet shared amongst friends. Whatever the occasion, you can enjoy your trip back in time to its fullest, helped along by the efficient and friendly waiting staff. Choosing what to eat is the hard part. Michelin-nominated head chef Raymond Thompson and his team offer an extensive menu with a range of steaks, fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes, plus specials, all meticulously prepared and presented. There is also a variety of distinctive sauces, fresh salads, vegetables and side dishes to enhance any meal. Starters include fresh calamari, crispy Brie, Henry’s homemade chicken liver paté, and giant garlic prawns cooked in ginger, chilli and fresh coriander and served on salad leaves and crusty bread. The main dishes make for mouth-watering reading, and come in generous portions fit for royalty. Choose the ‘reef and beef’ – 8oz rump steak topped with Henry’s creamy seafood sauce, king prawns and mussels, served on a stack of freshly roasted vegetables and potatoes – or a perfectly executed steak and kidney suet pudding, which you’ll find bursting with tender meat, mushrooms and herbs, all in a hearty suet pastry case, served with a creamed parsley mash and the day’s select vegetables. There are equally enticing seafood dishes and vegetarian options – try spinach dumplings, made with ricotta cheese and served with a rich tomato sauce. For those after something a little lighter, salads include a sizzling grilled squid and king prawn concoction – delicious. All of this comes in addition to Flaming Henry’s excellent steak menu, on which all meat is sourced from top-quality English cattle. All the cuts you would expect are on offer, plus ‘The Flaming Henry’ – a 32oz rump steak challenge that only the hardiest of carnivores should attempt.

A visit to Flaming Henry’s is not just an evening event – a comprehensive lunch menu offers succulent steaks plus pasta, pies, fish dishes, burgers, omelettes and sandwiches. Henry’s can also bring their superb cuisine to you, catering for private events such as weddings and parties with tailor-made menus. There is also a stunning banquet hall above the steakhouse, which could be the venue for your next celebration and in which regular medieval banquets are held – check the website for further information. Every year the Kent Messenger, the largest newspaper in the area, holds a ‘Restaurant of the Year’ competition, and Flaming Henry’s was named the winner in 2007 following visits from mystery diners – book a table soon and you’ll see why.
