The Balti Hut is conveniently located between Cheltenham and Gloucester, and the packed interior and lively atmosphere suggests that people are coming from far and wide to enjoy its reputed excellent food. The present owner, Mr Ahmed, having taken over The Balti Hut six and a half years ago, quickly realised that he had more customers than he could cater for and had the restaurant extended.
Indian cuisine at its best comes through the kitchen doors of The Balti Hut in generous potions. Even the poppadoms that we nibbled at the beginning of the meal were served with a large bowl of mixed salad. The starters were substantial, and extremely tasty. My companion’s spicy lamb chops, marinated in spices and herbs, and cooked in tandoori, were tender with just the right amount of kick, whilst my machli stuffed pepper with sardine flakes was light and unlike any Indian dish I had tried before.
We went on to sample the Bengali Machli, which, we learnt, is a popular Bangladeshi fish cooked with fresh garlic, mustard and red chillies. I had the fantastic Rajastani lamb, cooked with fresh ginger, green chillies, mustard and lime juice. Of the vast selection of side dishes on the menu, I was particularly fond of the baigun bhajee – fresh aubergines lightly fried with onions, tomatoes and spices.
Prices were very reasonable, with starters costing on average between £3 and £4, and main courses £7.50 to £9, with rice at about £2.50. You need to take your own drinks, but this helps to keep the cost down.
It really is no surprise that The Balti Hut is so popular. Service is warm and friendly, and the food is really very good. Mr Ahmed might find himself needing to build another extension if he continues to provide such a great eating experience for his
customers.
