Hidden away down an ancient cobbled alleyway near London’s once notorious Smithfield Meat Market, Le Café du Marché has been a firm foodie favourite for the last 27 years. This converted warehouse is full of rustic Gallic charm, with brick walls, wooden beams and white tablecloths. A family-run, independent restaurant, it serves classic French food with a twist, in an intimate, laid-back setting. Once inside, you feel as if you’re in provincial France, far away from the Square Mile. This venue lends itself wonderfully to business lunches, relaxed family meals and, with live music in the evenings, celebratory dinners. The extensive – and predominately French – wine list, vast display of bottles on the piano and comfortable wicker chairs help inspire the bon viveur in every guest.
La côte de boeuf and la soupe de poisson are favourite staples on the monthly changing menu, which reflects seasonal and freshly available produce. This month’s menu may feature dishes such as jambon persilee with cornichon and pain grille, followed by roast rabbit with borlotti beans, spaetzle and marsala sauce. There is only ever one sitting per service, so you never feel rushed.
There’s also a beautiful upstairs dining room, Le Grenier, which hosts a popular jazz night once a month, and Le Rendezvous next door is great for more informal lunchtime meals. Both are available for private dining.
