Pomodoro E Basilico
It is not often that a newly opened restaurant manages to achieve the successful alchemy of wonderful food, stylish decor and a truly warm welcome, but Pomodoro E Basilico has done just that.
The building, in central Lincoln, has undergone an extensive refurbishment introducing sophisticated shades of brown and turquoise. We were greeted by a smart, smiling waitress and seated on comfortable leather sofas to enjoy a pre-meal drink whilst we chose our food.
Complimentary home-made rosemary bread was served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar before the arrival of our antipasti of flavourful smoked trout on rocket, and a generous plate of oven-baked baby mozzarella wrapped in pancetta. For my main course I chose tagliolini primavera – fresh pasta with artichoke and asparagus – a delicate blend of fresh flavours, whilst my companion tucked into succulent prime Aberdeen Angus beef with a Gorgonzola glaze accompanied by a fresh vegetable parcel. For vegetarian lovers of blue cheese the saccottini alla Gorgonzola – tiny parcels of pasta in a cheese sauce – sounded equally tempting.
The portions were so generous that puddings would have been a challenge had they not been so wicked. We chose amaretto cheesecake with Piedmont cherry glaze and pistachio and dark chocolate brownie, both beautifully served and heavenly. The accompanying wine list is a well thought out selection of Italian and Sicilian varieties with a good choice of cocktails for something even fruitier.
Pomodoro caters for all tastes, with pizza and pasta starting at £5.99 and a wonderful fish and meat selection costing up to £16.99. Although we ate in the evening, Pomodoro would be equally wonderful for a business lunch or well deserved break from hitting the shops. An authentic taste of Italy in Lincoln. Bellissimo.
