Amidst the culture of Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter, The Old Bakery fits unassumingly into its historic surrounds. Last used as a bakery in 1954 and derelict for 40 years, the building has been lovingly restored, retaining many original features, and is currently writing a new culinary chapter behind its classic shop front.
Holder of two AA Rosettes, the award-winning Old Bakery is proud to use only the finest locally sourced produce in an assortment of dishes that showcase their fresh clean flavours. Chosen from the à la carte menu as a starter, I enjoyed the locally farmed thin slices of Lincolnshire ostrich fillet with roasted fig wrapped in pancetta. Accompanying my main course were crisp, fresh vegetables from the nearby allotment, which added an extra certain something to the delectable pan-roasted venison mignon. I also have to recommend the bread; the sight of freshly baked mounds of thinly sliced rosemary ciabatta, and pancetta and herbs among wholemeal and white, is really something. Alongside the à la carte and the lunch menus is a tasting menu which allows you to sample a number of the restaurant’s celebrated dishes; smaller portions of the likes of superb Lincolnshire reared slow-roasted Gloucester Old Spot baby pig and chef’s own Grimsby caught fish of the day are just the tip of the gastronomic iceberg. An extensive wine list of exceptional bins and varied dessert and cheese menus round things off perfectly.
The accolade-laden Old Bakery is also famed for its service and has the added bonus of excellent accommodation. All-inclusive offers include an overnight stay and a three-course meal for just £130. As a final touch you can also book cooking lessons with The Old Bakery’s famed patron chef.
With modest comfortable surroundings complemented by a menu that bedazzles, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice at The Old Bakery. It is certainly one of Lincoln’s finest.
