A charming eatery set in the heart of the city’s cathedral quarter, Epernay is one of the finest restaurants in Lincoln. Whether you’re a seafood novice or an old hat, there’s something to cater for everyone’s palate and it all comes straight from the docks at nearby Grimsby.
Uncluttered with rustic solid oak tables and chairs, gleaming cutlery, white washed walls and a splash of red, Epernay’s understated and refreshingly simple design provides the ideal backdrop for enjoying the equally fresh and clean flavours of the ocean-inspired menu.
To start, I went with an old favourite of mine, pan-fried king tiger prawns, which were flash-fried with garlic, chilli and lemon butter – I was rather grateful to see there was a pre-peeled option as I tend to make an awful mess. Other treats to start included oysters, poached pear and Cullen Skink – a traditional Scottish dish made with haddock. Relaxing into the evening’s pleasures I opted for the main course New Zealand green lip mussels, cooked to perfection as traditional moules mariniere and served with a thick wedge of fresh bread. Epernay also boasts a fine lobster menu using fresh Canadian produce. Local lobsters are also available from April to October but be sure to call 24 hours in advance if you would like to go the whole hog and order a particularly large specimen.
Of course, the restaurant also excels when cooking up a delicious selection of meals that aren’t seafood based, including pigeon breast and rack of Lincolnshire lamb. There are also plenty of vegetarian options available.
For dessert I had the pleasure of sampling an old favourite with a twist. I chose brioche bread and butter pudding, which was a thoroughly wicked end to a wonderful dining experience. Expect a meal to remember at Epernay.
