It's so nice to find a pub that really gets it right. A pretty red-brick exterior, adorned with colourful blooms, houses a cosy bar and restaurant, with dark wood tables and a handsome fireplace. The Plough maintains tradition, without the faded carpets and tatty decor, and is contemporary without resorting to incongruous modernity.

The food, like the decor, effortlessly finds the fine line between traditional British and modern European and follows it with panache. This is good wholesome pub food, but for diners of the 21st Century who demand a little more from their pub grub. Start continental with a platter of antipasto, featuring a plethora of meats, olives, gherkins, feta and sunflower bread; or try a modern twist on a classic with slices of black pudding, bacon and grilled tomato with mustard vinaigrette and mixed leaf salad. The mains menu is extensive, and takes advantage of the best of British produce. Try rack of Staffordshire lamb, served carved or whole, with a red wine and redcurrant sauce; Barbary duck, pan fried and served on a rosti potato with onion marmalade and plum sauce; or a simple salmon fillet dressed in its best - a classic Hollandaise sauce - served with salad, vegetables and new potatoes.

This theme of quality and classic cooking extends right through to the dessert menu, and you can guarantee to find your favourite pud - if not before you choose, then definitely after. Crumble, cheesecake, hot sponge puddings, profiteroles and ice creams all feature, and if you judge a restaurant on the quality of its desserts as I do, you're bound to give The Plough ten out of ten.

The Plough Inn is family run and the care and love brought to the operation is apparent, whether you're sitting by the pond in their English country garden, enjoying a chilled glass of wine from their comprehensive list; or snuggled by the fireplace enjoying steak, chips and a pint of ale, you will feel looked after, cosseted and right at home in your new favourite pub.
