Serving excellent contemporary European cuisine, The Lemon Tree is a must-visit eatery. The restaurant has been built into the 2000-year-old Roman wall that runs through Colchester, yet its interior provides a beautiful contrast to the historic setting. Inside is well lit, modern and comfortable, with floor-to ceiling windows.

Even during the busiest periods of the week, the staff here manage to provide excellent service. Efficient, polite and friendly, they are constantly on hand yet never imposing, offering a knowledgeable, guiding hand when it comes to the food. A set menu is available at remarkable value for money, while a more extensive à la carte menu is also available, accompanied by a superb wine list and a choice of Mersea Island ales. The highlights of our meal included a perfectly cooked steak with homemade chips and a delicious mushroom sauce, as well as sea bass fillet served with chive mashed potatoes and an exemplary seafood chowder. It is clearly evident from the flavour and aesthetic qualities of each dish that only the finest, freshest local produce is used.

With room for up to 55 guests, the main restaurant is an elegant space. And if you want a unique dining experience, the 'Roman Cavern' - with capacity for 26 diners - is the perfect place to enjoy some first-class cuisine.
