Thurmaston, on the outskirts of Leicester, is something of a boating centre, lying as it does on the meandering River Soar. It has two marinas, a boat yard and countless mooring spots. It also lies on the old Roman road, the Fosse Way, and evidence of its strategic location are still clear – it’s a lively place, home to several international brands and easily accessible from all around.

The Willow is set back on Humberstone Lane which is between Thurmaston and Leicester, and has a pretty outside patio for dining alfresco. Since a recent refurbishment, the interior is light, bright and welcoming. There’s a large dining area, a non-smoking restaurant, separate bar with pool and darts facilities and even pentanque courts, so you won’t be short of things to do. Bring the children – they’ll be made very welcome. And it’s a great place to go for Sunday lunch, with a very reasonable Sunday carvery at only £6.50.

On the subject food and value for money, why not try the lunchtime carvery, between noon and 2pm Monday to Friday, for only £3.95. In addition, a varied lunch menu, good selection of real ales and decent wine list make this a great all-round eating and drinking venue.

The Willow also has disabled facilities and hosts a free quiz every Tuesday.
