Market Harborough, with its abundance of excellent places to dine, is home to two of my particular favourites. The White Horse Inn & Restaurant was refurbished three years ago, giving way to a fresh, subtly contemporary interior that in no way detracts from the building’s period façade. A vision of the quintessential village pub from the outside, the restaurant inside serves a selection fit for any inquisitive passing gourmand.

From the à la carte menu, to begin, you might like to sample a salad of crispy bacon and scallops with rocket and balsamic syrup (£5.95), followed by local fillet of beef with garlic potatoes, redcurrant sauce and homemade creamed horseradish (£16.95). Desserts are designed daily and can be selected from the traditional blackboard. The bistro menu features British classics like crispy battered cod with chips and mushy peas (£8.95) alongside the likes of Spanish paella and moules marinieres. If dining on a Sunday, you can expect traditional roast beef, lamb and turkey, all freshly cooked and delicious. A dining room for private functions, holding up to 50 people, provides the perfect excuse to hold you celebration here, whilst the well-appointed en-suite bedrooms (from £69 including breakfast) offer further temptation to sample the fruits of the extensive, expertly compiled wine list.

The White Horse’s sister venue, The Nevill Arms, has received a far more recent facelift and the effect is overtly pronounced. The same team have injected new life into this venue and introduced a menu to rival any competition. A list of lovingly prepared meals, feature on both the bistro and restaurant menus and, like The White Horse, The Nevill Arms is the ideal destination for a family get-together with a conservatory available for private parties of 20, and a separate dining room for functions of up to 70 diners – bed and breakfast starts from £89.

So, The Nevill Arms or The White Horse? I leave that very tricky decision to you.
