If you like your Indian food cooked by experts and full of the most amazing subtle flavours then a trip to Mem-Saab is a must. Based just outside the city centre you are welcomed in with a friendly smile. Nothing is too much trouble for the new restaurant manager – fresh from a five-star hotel in New Dehli – and his team and all of his customers are treated to his five-star service. The restaurant is a comfortable arrangement, with cool cream walls, warm browns and a bar area with low-level seating and even a baby grand piano.
After struggling with the extensive menu for a while over crispy poppadoms and chutneys we asked whether anything could be recommended. We were then treated to a mouth-watering array of cooked meats including achari chicken, salmon tikka and lamb kebab. Everything was so tender and flavourful that, despite the ever-increasingly tight feeling around my waist, we opted for a generous selection of main courses too. I chose more of the same and again indulged in the sumptuous flavours of the tandoori chicken and marinated king prawns. Alongside this feast I enjoyed stuffed kulcha which is naan bread filled with potato; it would have satisfied my appetite even if served solo. My companion went for the tender lamb dhansak with pilau rice – the fragrant rice complementing the fusion of spices in the dhansak wonderfully. We had washed the whole meal down with Kingfisher beers and sat back suitably full when we were presented with a dish of ice cream and hot sweet dumpling – delicious.
Mem-Saab can cater for 350 guests for functions and they also have a workers lunchtime special for £5.95. There are many good reasons for everyone to try this wonderful restaurant.
