Situated at the heart of the new St Georges area of Leicester, Houstons Bar & Grill is ideally placed for the C u rve theatre and the city centre. Extensive interior and exterior refurbishment has resulted in a stylish, well-designed restaurant on split levels, which is ideal for both casual, relaxed dining or for larger parties.
Reclined in soft leather armchairs, we studied an extensive and inviting menu offering a choice of prime British steaks, fresh fish and grill classics such as delicious homemade burgers and barbecue ribs. Faced with an appealing selection of starters, my companion was more than satisfied with his choice of deep-fried Brie wedges, which were rich and melting and deliciously complemented by a relish of orange, cranberry and ginger. A large flat mushroom, roasted in a garlic-infused sauce and topped with glazed goat’s cheese and coriander pesto, was my choice and it was superbly presented, offering varied textures and aromas.
The steaks for which Houstons is famous dominated the menu, and my companion chose an 8oz sirloin steak, which was fantastically tender and tasty. Accompanied by golden sautéed potatoes and drizzled with a rich blue cheese sauce, the dish surpassed all expectations. My own choice was roasted rump of lamb. This was advertised as the chef’s signature dish and it was easy to understand why: generous slices of pink, juicy and tender lamb presented on a bed of well-seasoned crushed potatoes. The result was exceptional and each mouthful was a delight.
The homemade desserts are a must and those with a sweet tooth will find the fresh strawberry and peach knickerbocker glories irresistible. These are available for one person or for sharing. Alternatively try the chocolate and pecan brownie, smothered in a rich, dark chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice cream – heavenly.
There are fixed price menus and regular offers available, including the fantastic Wednesday steak night when you can dine for just £10 a head. For a casual lunch, a relaxed evening meal or a pre-theatre dinner, Houstons comes highly recommended.
