Throughout the world, French cuisine is regarded as the last word in sophistication and the mark against which all other food is measured. So it is lucky indeed for the residents of Satchville in Leicestershire, that two years ago saw the arrival of Yves and Elisabeth Ogrodzki. Having left their restaurant in a little village near Avignon, Yves decided to bring a bit of Provençal sunshine to the plates of our fair nation.
On top of their à la carte restaurant menu and cafe menu Yves and Elizabeth organise special evenings. Tuesday is oyster night, crepes and buckwheat galette are on offer every Wednesday, and Thursdays see a menu totally devoted to that very French delicacy, mussels. Moules ‘au saumon fumé’ sees homemade smoked salmon lending the juiciest of mussels a fantastic flavour (£9.95).
The à la carte menu changes on a regular basis and offers the choice of various cold and warm starters followed by a selection of meat and fish dishes. Why not start with the duck and green pepper corn terrine (£5.95) from the current menu, followed by the most divine herb coated lamb cutlets with a light garlic cream (£14.95). Other Gallic treats include pan-fried whole sea bass with a ‘basquaise’ sauce (£14.95), and the warm starter of pan-fried scallops on an olive oil confit with tomato tartlet and a delightful basil cream (£8.95).
Although the restaurant is closed on Sundays, events like Mother’s Day can be catered for and special enquiries for parties are welcome. Free cooking lessons take place once a month, so you can wow your loved ones in the comfort of your own home. There is also a DVD on sale in which Yves gives two lessons, the profits from which are donated to the Poppy Appeal.
So, for all the wonder and flavour of an authentic Gallic bistro, Yves and Elizabeth have surely created Leicestershire’s first and only choice.
