Eataway is situated just a stone’s throw from the main bus station and a five-minute walk from the centre of town. The interior is modern and classy, and if you like Chinese, Cantonese and Thai food, from now on Eataway will probably be the first name on your list of places to dine.
At Eataway you can, as the name so accurately implies, eat as much as you like – and all for a fixed price. At lunch adults are charged just £4.99 and children (under 12) a mere £3.99. At weekends the lunch tariff for adults is about £2 more but the child’s price stays the same, so if you want to take the whole family out to lunch, this is unbeatable value.
If you decide you’d rather spend an evening at Eataway, when the choice is even greater, the weekday tariff is £10.90 and just £1 more at the weekend; and children eat for £5.90 so, again, you’d be hard-pressed to find better prices.
There is so much variety in the food offered that it really is hard to choose, and you feel that you want to try everything on the menu. Eataway’s policy is to take only what you can eat so as not to waste. In China, eating is regarded as a form of art and the owners here follow that thinking. At any rate, every dish on the menu is picture perfect, with flavours that only enhance the visuals.
It would be nigh on impossible to recount every dish here, so I’ll stick with highlights. Starters range from chicken and sweetcorn soup, prawn toast and crab claws, to crispy aromatic duck, seaweed, spare ribs and fried chicken. Even by taking small portions, you begin to feel well fed after working through this selection. I was impressed at how quickly our dirty plates were taken away by the smiling staff, all of whom were eager to please, and if there is a selection you want to try and supplies have run low, don’t worry – it’s all replenished constantly.
You can move on to delights such as lemon chicken, mussels in black bean sauce, teriyaki beef, satay beef, sweet and sour chicken and Thai-style curry. In the evening, try the barbecue dishes – cooked fresh on the grill while you wait – or some sushi. One of the dishes I found most difficult to resist was a spicy seafood salad – I must have made at least two trips for that alone.
The proprietor runs Eataway with total care and attention. She welcomed us on arrival, and is clearly proud of her restaurant, and has good reason to be. She told us that children enjoy eating here because they can first see what they’re going to eat, and I think this applies equally to adults.
If you want to treat the family, a date or simply yourself, go along to Eataway – and I guarantee you’ll be back.
