The Eastern Garden – Loughborough’s oldest Indian restaurant – is perfect for people who love eating authentic, top-quality Indian food in a relaxed, contemporary setting.
The current owner refurbished the front of the restaurant when he took over 18 months ago and has plans for further enhancements. The head chef is obviously a master of his craft and whether you want to order a takeaway or have a sit down meal, the range of dishes on offer is exceptional.
Within minutes of ordering, a plate of poppadoms arrived accompanied by an array of colourful condiments in little square white dishes. As I listened to the relaxing sounds of Café Del Mar and wondered about the origin of the stone goddess on the wall, I could feel all the stresses of the week slipping away.
The service is friendly, attentive and professional and the menu is set out for easy reading with starters, side dishes, main courses, mixed grills, specials, traditional dishes and English – all at very reasonable prices. We ordered the onion bhaji and a meat samosa, which came with a side salad and olives. Both were absolutely gorgeous and not too spicy. To follow, we chose dhakaiya murgh – charcoal grilled chicken with cream, fruit and nuts – and the saagwala, a dish cooked with fresh spinach, ginger, garlic and fresh herbs – both Eastern Garden specialities. They arrived beautifully presented and tasted divine – perfectly complemented by pilau rice and naan.
Plenty of desserts were on offer, including Boston mudcake and Belgian chocolate bombe – but we finished the evening relaxing on the comfy sofas with a coffee.
With meticulous attention to detail and the best Indian food I’ve ever had, I can’t recommend this wonderful restaurant highly enough.
