With the ancient, crumbling abbey just yards away and the sun kissed terrace with its jolly parasols, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were nibbling tapas in Barcelona or perhaps Madrid. Yet Dos Amigos is in Kirkstall, a mere olive's throw from the city centre of Leeds. The amigos in question at this bustling, welcoming Mediterranean eatery - Spanish and Italian - sit comfortable together on a tapas menu that is as vast as it is fascinating. All the classic dishes are here, and no less than three types of paella, alongside Italian nibbles such as calamari fritti. There's even a choice of house wine, Spanish or Italian.

Over soft and garlicky pan Catalan and a bowl of olives, we decided it was only polite to give both culinary styles a whirl. Spicy patatas bravas, a wonderfuly light tortilla, a fantastic berenjenas rellenas - aubergine topped with tomato and Spanish cheese - and an aromatic pepperoni arrostiti - Italian roast mixed peppers with garlic olive oil and fennel seeds - are a vegetarian's dream. My meat-eating guest was equally impressed with his salt cured cod in white wine, scallops al limone and a rustic Italian meat stew. The two disciplines of cooking sit seamlessly together; however for lovers of Italian food Dos Amigos has just launched a well thought out à la carte menu featuring a full range of pasta, risotto and meat dishes including terrinadi fagiano - pheasant and foi gras terrine with red onion chutney, bistecca al pepe - and locally raised beef in peppercorn and brandy sauce.
