The Pier is located in the heart of Harwich old town in an enviable position overlooking the picturesque harbour and Ha’penny Pier. This well-established hotel celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2013 and has been awarded four AA stars and two rosettes for cooking.
The Harbourside, a fine-dining restaurant on the first floor of The Pier, opens from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is renowned for using locally caught seafood, much of which is landed in the harbour opposite. Head chef John Goff takes much of his influence from the sea, so expect to see Harwich lobster featuring on the menu, served either grilled or Thermidor. Enhancing the dining experience is the view which encompasses the twin estuaries of the Stour and Orwell rivers. A polished pewter bar takes pride of place on the upper level, which is an ideal place to relax with a glass of Champagne and half a dozen oysters before dinner. What’s more, you can also stay in one of The Pier’s 14 bedrooms. Many of the rooms look out to sea and over the harbour – a stay in the Mayfl ower suite, complete with a telescope, is a must.
