Happily located on the outskirts of Harpenden, this country gastropub is an excellent venue for a quick bite to eat with your workmates, with its easy access and plentiful parking; while its relaxed and unhurried atmosphere makes it ideal for a more leisurely lunch or evening meal with friends or loved ones.
The pub interior is stylish and contemporary and the ambience vibrant yet laid back, thanks to comfy seating and sofas dotted around the entrance and bar area. Large open fireplaces add interest to the open-plan layout and are put to good use during those chilly winter months. The patio areas allow for alfresco dining when the temperature creeps up, but the light and airy interior offers an attractive alternative.
The bar is well stocked with a great selection of wines and beers and the food menu caters for a wide variety of tastes. Options include traditional pub fare, a selection of seafood dishes, homemade pizzas baked in the wood-fired oven and a range of fresh salads. Popular plates to share include gooey baked Camembert served with toast and tangy onion marmalade and the Baltic plate; a seafood feast of roll mops, shell-onprawns, anchovies, gravadlax and smoked mackerel served with a horseradish cocktail sauce. The 'little dishes' we sampled included gorgeously light, moist and perfectly spicy baked crab cakes and plump pan-seared scallops served on rocket with a balsamic vinegar reduction. Main course choices more than met our expectations. Rib-eye steak served with Café de Paris butter was cooked exactly as requested, while the red snapper was served with a selection of Mediterranean vegetables, asparagus, sauté potatoes and a delicious pesto cream. Homemade steamed chocolate pudding served with chocolate sauce and ice cream proved irresistible, and the apple and strawberry crumble, served with freshly-made custard, was a mouth-watering end to a leisurely dinner.
Dishes are freshly prepared and served with great care and attention to detail; portions are generous and the service impeccable. We are already planning our next visit.
