This place has come a long way since starting life as a stable block some 300 years ago, and, if you've discovered The Bean Tree for yourself, you are surely already an avid fan. If not, then let me convince you - this is one of my favourite places to eat in Hertfordshire.

Overlooking Leyton Green in the very heart of Harpenden, The Bean Tree radiates a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. It was completely gutted to a shell and renovated in 2000 to create the very contemporary open-plan dining space it is today. It still retains the charm of its original cottage status, but modern touches have brought it right up to date. The real star of the show, however, is the walled terrace garden. Home to the restaurant's namesake - a beautiful Indian bean tree which takes centre stage - this is a glorious place to sit with a friend, sipping a glass of chilled Rose d'Astros from Provence and putting the world to rights.

Service is attentive yet not overwhelming and the menu passionately put together and varied. From the main à la carte, steamed skate is served with pan-fried pineapple, broad beans, coconut and basil dressing, while guinea fowl breast comes stuffed with tarragon mousse, green peas, potato fondant and Dijon mustard sauce; duck breast is complemented by Dauphinoise potatoes, a spinach purée and honey and ginger sauce. You can literally taste the freshness in every mouthful. It's a labour of love for The Bean Tree's team of chefs, with all stock, sauces, ice creams and sorbets made on site. All meat is sourced from the most reputable of suppliers; fish and shellfish land overnight from their Brixton and Plymouth beginnings, and vegetables and fruit are delivered directly from the New Covent Garden Market. The Bean Tree's three distinctive dining spaces provide the perfect settings for parties of ten to 50 guests, and weddings receptions have also become popular here. It's clear to see that word has got out about this fantastic place.
