As one who relishes choice, the impeccably adventurous wine list delighted me, as did everything else I sampled from the innovative menu. Each dish seems to top its predecessor. From the menu, which caters for both the adventurous diner and traditional gourmand alike, my companion chose chicken liver parfait with fruit compote with warm toast, following it closely with a juicy 8oz fillet steak Diane served with sautéed potatoes.
Wild mushroom and asparagus risotto scented with truffle oil begged to be sampled - a task I gleefully undertook. Aromatic pork kebabs served with tangy kumquats and shallots, set upon stir-fried egg noodles was my next pleasure, succeeded by bewitching croque en bouche; profiteroles oozing cream, provocatively drizzled in caramelised sugar.
Players becomes lively at weekends and there is a definite buzz about the place - an atmosphere that exudes all the character of its charming host.
