The White House in Guildford is architecturally, as its name suggests, a miniature version of The White House, Washington. It stands dramatic and imposing on the banks of the river and is floodlit at night, lending it a regal air. Its situation, close to the famous Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, makes it an ideal stopping point for a pre-theatre meal.

Inside, the pub has recently undergone a tasteful refurbishment and features an impressive light and airy conservatory, should inclement weather prevent alfresco dining. The menu offers plenty of choice, whether you are looking for a hearty meal or a light snack to enjoy with a glass of wine, or alongside one of Fuller's excellent ales. You are challenged with the tricky task of choosing from the main menu, or going with one of the platters to share, a gourmet burger or a dish from the specials board.

Plump for the main menu and tuck into traditional pub food such as fish and chips, sausage and mash or, my personal favourite, ham, egg and chips. But the main menu doesn't begin and end with the best of British comfort food - there are also exciting dishes such as stuffed chicken breast filled with feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, and a delicious herb-crusted salmon fillet.

In a sociable mood' Well, select one of the platters to share - a Mediterranean, fish or American meat feast option - to be enjoyed in the company of friends and a fine bottle of red. Alternatively, the very popular gourmet burger menu consists of chef's own-recipe burger, a Cajun chicken breast or a mixed bean and potato burger - simply add a gourmet topping, all of which are listed on the blackboard, and you have your very own bespoke meal.

The White House may be Lilliputian in size, relative to its namesake that is, but the portions are exceedingly large and generous, as is the warm and friendly hospitality. Pop by and enjoy a meal fit for a president.
