On the main road that runs through Compton village, you'll find the charming hideaway that is The Harrow Inn. On the outside, it is a traditional old pub with a good beer garden, patio and plenty of parking at the rear. On the inside it is full of rustic charm with its exposed beams and an intimate feel.

Priding itself on its excellent service and excellent food, The Harrow manages not to disappoint on either count. The (non-smoking) restaurant offers a wide choice of dishes on a menu that is regularly updated for seasonal variations using, where possible, locally produced ingredients. The (smoking permitted) bar area offers customers the chance to indulge in the same menu as available in the restaurant along with other snacks, and also the opportunity to partake in a laidback pint or glass of smooth red.

The starters range from wholesome and warming soups through to vegetarian options such as a mushroom and asparagus pillow, to more exotic fare - on this occasion duck and mango salad. You will not fail to find more than one main course to your liking; the lamb shank was beautifully tender as was the steak and Guinness pie. The presentation is top-notch too.

But it's not just food that makes a place. The service here is both friendly and attentive, just the right blend of relaxed efficiency.

It might be easy to drive past the Harrow but you'd be missing out on a real gem.
