The Whitminster Inn conjures up images of a traditional pub serving à la carte lunches and dinners and a good Sunday carvery – and this is right, but it is only half the story. The Whitminster Inn, a 16th-Century pub, has been sympathetically extended and developed and now offers a complete range of facilities including a Chinese restaurant, China Garden, and an Indian restaurant, Indian Garden. The Chinese offers a full menu plus a number of set meals including a vegetarian option. The Indian restaurant offers a variety of dishes from the Bangladesh region including chef’s specials. There are also function rooms, perfect for celebrations or business meetings, a marquee and accommodation.

We dined in the main restaurant – modern and stylish yet maintaining traditional elements and combining a dining and pub area with comfortable leather sofas, solid wooden flooring and a cosy dual-aspect fireplace. I started with breaded flat mushrooms served with a creamy garlic dipping sauce while my husband opted for mini Thai chilli fishcakes served with a sweet chilli sauce. Both were exceptional value priced at under £5 a dish. Portions are generous and service is extremely efficient and friendly.

Moving on to mains and I chose the wild mushroom stroganoff served on a bed of fragrant rice. My husband decided on one of the traditional pies form the daily-changing specials board served with chips. There’s a large grill section on the menu if you fancy steaks, served with your choice of peppercorn, Diane or Stilton sauce. For family dining a children’s menu is available.

The Sunday carvery is particularly popular and booking is recommended. Housed in the marquee, lunch is available as both two and three courses, plus a children’s option. The trio of roast beef, pork and turkey served with all the trimmings, including oven-roasted potatoes, steamed vegetables and homemade gravy is a firm favourite. An eat as much as you like buffet is also catered for in the China Garden. The Whitminster Inn is true destination dining offering something for everyone, every taste and every occasion.
