After 25 years of success at Dionysos in Cheltenham, Dino has downsized and decamped to Gloucester, where his popularity will undoubtedly endure, both with loyal former customers and a new wave of locals.
Dino’s Village Taverna is located in the direct vicinity of Gloucester Cathedral, informally furnished, colourfully decorated and candle-lit for intimacy.
The menu is wide-ranging and for many will evoke fond memories of long evenings dining in Cypriot coastal towns or the Troodos Mountains. Dino’s slavish attention to detail ensures that all dishes are made with authentic ingredients and to the original recipe while still enhanced by his own creative flourishes.
The mezze, at £17.95 per person, is a revelation: a selection (a rather large one, in this case) of supreme bite-sized meat and vegetable dishes, salads, dips and bread – Hellenic tapas, if you will.
Prawns in sweet chilli sauce is a perfect example of Dino’s version of fusion cooking. The sardines were prepared and presented simply, as they should be, the spicy beef and barbecued Cypriot sausage offered further contrast, and all of this was accompanied by the Greek classics: taramasalata, tzatziki and houmous. You can choose from red or white Cypriot wines or, if you prefer, familiar New or Old World favourites.
Dino’s offers high quality and extraordinarily good value for money. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
