A track record spanning more than 20 years and multiple awards surely indicate the authenticity of the food and the quality of service delivered by the team at Nonnas. Opened in 1996 and counting Sylvester Stallone as a customer, this Italian institution has become an indispensible part of Sheffield’s dining landscape, loved by locals and sought out by visitors to the region.
Nonnas menus have developed and modernised over the last two decades, but the kitchen’s dedication to executing authentic, inspired Italian dishes has remained a constant and is testament to the team’s skill, drive and passion. From the regularly changing selection of regional pasta and risotto specialities, diners might opt for rigatoni alla diavola – spicy salami, fennel, Ligurian olives and tomato ragu, or trofie al formaggio, a Ligurian pasta dish of creamed leeks, Parmesan and crumbled goat’s cheese. The range of Italian-style meat and fish mains present the likes of 8oz pan-fried beef fillet served alongside buttered turnip purée, crushed new potatoes, pancetta and red wine sauce, and pan-fried cod accompanied by saffron arancini, buttered samphire and sundried tomato dressing. There are also superb vegan dishes and a healthy breakfast menu.
Inside, the dining room is flooded with plenty of natural light and there’s also an outside terrace. In the evening, Nonnas’ striking mix of rustic and contemporary interior design and warm lighting creates the perfect ambience for all manner of get-togethers. Keep an eye out for regular events.
