There is something deliciously decadent about taking a seat in the window at Epernay after work, sharing a bottle of Champagne and a cheeseboard, and simply watching the world go by. Established in 2005, Epernay occupies a prime spot in the city’s Electric Press development on Great George Street, just off Millennium Square, and is a splendid new use of an old red brick space. In recent years it had become very much a cocktail bar, and though some delightful concoctions are still available, a recent change of ownership has seen Epernay focus on its range of Champagne, firmly establishing it as the ideal venue to visit for pre- or post-dinner drinks.
The wine list is bubbling with choice, with Champagnes available by the glass, bottle and magnum. If you’re feeling flush, or have just signed a record deal or a playing contract with Leeds United, you might opt for the 1990 Dom Pérignon. We chose from the other end of the list, sharing a crisp, light and delicate Montaudan brut, which proved an excellent companion to a cheeseboard, comprising beautifully rich Manchego, the sweeter and nuttier Gruyère de Comte and the creamy Vignotte, which comes from the Champagne region of France. The atmosphere at Epernay is beautifully relaxed, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and it all makes for a really special evening out.
