Although only eight miles from the centre of Leeds, in the ancient village of Barwick-in-Elmet, this charming 300-year-old inn feels light-years away. There's a pretty beer garden with alfresco seating for warm summer days, and a cosy interior where walkers can rest their feet and mingle with friendly locals and staff. Whether you prefer traditional dishes from home shores or from further afield, you'll find something to suit on the extensive menu. Perhaps begin with exotic onion bhajis or more traditional pan-fried chicken livers, followed by a main such as whole Oriental sea bass, or pork fillet in a wine, cream and mushroom sauce. There are superb 'sizzlers' too, like king prawns in hoi-sin sauce. Traditional Sunday lunches are rightfully popular (booking is advisable) and 'pensioner platters' make the ideal sharing option for the over-60s. Behind the bar is a fantastic range of drinks, including quality cask ales, to wash it all down with
