A quintessential village pub in a simply idyllic location; it is no wonder The Crown Inn caught the eye of owners Paul and Liz Jackson. Each with a wealth of experience behind them, the two also share a passion for exceptional cuisine and a strong sense of community values. Supporting local businesses by sourcing ingredients from nearby, and inviting input from their customers, The Crown is an asset to the village of Great Ouseburn.
The Crown's menu presents plenty of temptation. I began my meal with an exquisite Whitby white crab and avocado tian - layers of seasoned Whitby crab and avocado, served with a tangy lemon mayonnaise and rustic bread - before moving on to sample one of their famous steaks. Direct from the open fields Waterford House Farm in Ripon, their meat is as local as you get, with bags of flavour and succulence to prove it. Cut to order, my 10oz sirlion arrived with a garni of roasted vine tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms, French fried onions and rustic hand-cut chips. The chef's sauces vary from month to month; I was left pondering over a choice of wild mushroom and tarragon, mixed pepper au poivre or a red wine and shallot accompaniment.
With five areas for dining from which to choose - the bar, the snug, the lodge, the dual room or the courtyard - and food that is out of this world, The Crown Inn is truly a place that goes beyond just a warm welcome.
