Located in the centre of the beautiful and historic city of Harrogate is The Crown Hotel. Having recently undergone a total refurbishment, it offers a wide range of conference facilities and function rooms, but also makes a great base from which to explore the vast array of shops and attractions which Harrogate and the surrounding area has to offer.
Within the hotel is the chic restaurant, The Place; a dining venue frequented by both residents and locals. Friendly staff will guide you to a table adorned with fresh flowers and crisp linen napkins, with incredibly comfy leather chairs for you to sink into and then peruse the menu. On offer is an interesting and inventive variety of meals, and vegetarians will be pleased to see that there are more meat-free dishes available than just mushroom stroganoff. Given the cold day, our meal began with homemade minestrone soup and delicious pan-fried king prawns with lime chutney and radish and rocket salad. This was followed by roast beef with a homemade Yorkshire pudding, lovely roast potatoes and a tasty vegetable accompaniment, and a moist chicken breast with borlotti bean casserole, chorizo and red onion salad. Both were perfectly cooked and the flavours fused brilliantly.
Although fully satisfied after our main courses, we couldn't resist sampling the curious strawberry and vanilla soup and the lemon and lime cheesecake; I can't say there was much left on the plate when we were through with them. If you happen to be in the area, I thoroughly recommend you pay a visit to The Place; enjoy a morning coffee while sitting in the window watching the world go by, bring your computer and utilise the free WiFi, or simply take advantage of the reasonably priced two or three-course offer available for food. With attentive staff, a well-stocked bar and well-spaced tables for a personal and relaxing dining experience, The Place Bistro and Bar is certainly the place to be.
