Edward Moon was a travelling chef who worked for the British Colonial service in the early 19th Century. His adventures took him to far-away places where he cooked for governors and ambassadors, taking them back to their homeland with every British-flavoured mouthful. As well as being an expert in English cuisine, he was also very creative and embraced the cooking styles and unusual ingredients that he came across on his travels. Today, Moon's pays homage to his life by serving a plethora of English dishes, alongside some internationally influenced creations.
Located next to many of Stratford-upon-Avon's key historic sites, Moon's - as it is locally known - is an ideal spot for relaxing after a day pounding the tourist trail. This charming period building draws you in and presents a wide variety of fresh local ingredients, carefully prepared and served with pride. Start with roast beetroot salad with a dill dressing, and then indulge in chorizo and Brie stuffed chicken breast or, my particular favourite, sizzling fillets of sea bass served over a spring onion risotto with a chive and white wine sauce and seasonal vegetables. Moon's will happily cater for any special dietary requirements, and produce a gluten-free menu for coeliacs. From Sunday to Friday you can take advantage of a great-value two-course lunch or pre-theatre meal - the theatre is just a five-minute stroll from the front door. Friendly, professional and well worth a visit.
