During a typical British Monday lunchtime - wet and grey - Butlers Leap came into view through the rain and, with our bellies rumbling, my partner and I headed in for a spot of lunch. Cosy, glowing with warmth and abuzz with diners, it soon restored our spirits.
From a mouth-watering menu, we started with a portion of fiery buffalo wings with a creamy, cooling blue cheese dip, and a generous portion of creamy chicken liver paté with crunchy malted toast. This came with delicious spiced onion marmalade, and each took us by surprise. This was gourmet stuff - really tasty, well-put-together food in a relaxed setting.
The blend of comfort and quality continued into the main event. My companion plumped for the rib-eye steak, which was juicy, full-bodied, bursting with flavour and served with golden chips and delightfully crunchy onion rings, while my choice of grilled lamb rump was wholly satisfying, with crisp, seasonal vegetables, baby potatoes and a red wine and currant sauce. Dessert was a strawberry ice cream sundae and a rich chocolate brownie, helped on its way by velvety ice cream.
