Hamiltons
Modern British
This unpretentious family-run restaurant is located on an elegant Georgian terrace right beside Weymouth seafront. The pavement seating area is an ideal spot for watching the world go by on a sunny day, and the relaxed atmosphere and attentive yet unobtrusive service make for a delightful experience in the day and the evening.
Hamiltons, now run by brothers Marco and Ernesto d’Agostino, was opened in 1965 by their father, Domenico, as an ice cream parlour and café. During the day you can still pop in for a morning cappuccino and slice of cake, a traditional English breakfast, or a lunchtime dish of homemade pasta.
Chef Marco trained at The Dorchester in London, and his creativity and expertise is apparent in the regularly changing menus, which feature the finest and freshest ingredients, including lots of local seafood. The majority of dishes on the evening menu are modern takes on classic British dishes, with starters such as dressed fresh local crab with toasted onion loaf, and mains like pan-roasted rump of Dorset lamb with braised lentils and chorizo sausage jus. Italian influences can be seen in dishes such as bruschetta, and orange and almond cake with mascarpone cream. Other desserts include traditional British favourites like homemade treacle tart, as well as a selection of English and Italian cheeses. There is a varied, international wine list, with half-bottles available, and Ernesto is always happy to advise.
