The Wise Man Inn is a 400-year-old, chocolate-box inn with a thatched roof. Following a two year restoration, the inn reopened its doors, and has been a popular dining destination ever since. Wind down the pretty lanes of West Stafford, just two miles from Dorchester, to find food with a sophisticated twist on traditional fare.
Once you've been warmly welcomed into the rustic, vintage-inspired setting by Phil and his staff, there are three menu options to ponder over: à la carte, lunch and an extremely popular Sunday lunch, serving locally reared meats and a huge selection of tasty vegetables. There is also a children's menu and an everchanging specials board that features local fresh seafood choices.
Head chef Leigh and the passionate kitchen team are determined to create great flavours and memorable dining experiences. Impressive starters include the fresh Portland crabcake with tomato salsa and handmade Long Barrow pork Scotch egg. Mains come in the form of classics such as as the beer-battered catch of the day and handmade pies, all of which are always made fresh. Vegetarians can forget the usual options; here, there's an enticing dish of silky handmade Cheddar gnocchi with sautéed mushrooms, fresh asparagus and mascarpone available. When it comes to dessert, making your mind up might take a little longer. The caramel, peach and summer fruit knickerbocker glory, and the warm treacle tart with ginger ice cream are firm favourites of those who keep coming back for more. All can be washed down with a selection of New World and classic wines. The drinks selection includes local ales, perfect for sipping whilst soaking up the rays in the large garden. Keep your eyes peeled for events which run throughout the year, too.
Once fully satisfied, take a short trip to Thomas Hardy's birthplace at the National Trust property, Hardy's Cottage. Or, burn off your meal with one of the many walks or cycle routes nearby.
Visiting The Wise Man Inn is a very wise idea indeed
