Standing proudly in Dartmoor National Park, with the River Teign running alongside the garden, this is an exceptionally beautiful spot. The elegant decor at Mill End is belied by a friendly, informal atmosphere – perfect to retreat to after a dog walk or a ramble in the surrounding parkland. Set in an old 15th-century mill, it combines traditional country style with lovely modern touches. Since acquiring the hotel, the owners have transformed it into a two-AA-rosette-awarded destination that visitors can’t wait to return to. Head chef Darren Knockton uses local produce to create food that is simultaneously hearty and beautiful. You can savour exquisite venison Carpaccio, followed by loin of monkfish with spiced lentils and tempura prawns. For dessert, indulge in the likes of black cherry tiffin. Alternatively, drop in one afternoon for a grand tea, savoury afternoon tea or a cake plate, or for groups of five to eight guests, book in advance to take Champagne afternoon tea in the summer house.
