Since taking over The Manor Inn two years ago, owners Chris and Jon have put their stamp on the place, while ensuring it remains rooted in its community. We visited on a Thursday, when the Manor runs its steak and quiz night: two steaks and a bottle of wine for just £25. Unsurprisingly the place was packed and the atmosphere was lively and sociable.
This quirky building, dating from 1869, has cosy informal spaces and large dining rooms, and can accommodate everything from an intimate supper, to lunch for all the family. The menu ranges from lighter dishes for smaller appetites, to the full three courses for those who wish to savour the experience. We shared Mediterranean antipasti to start, which included a delectable selection of meats, cheeses, peppers, olives and warm bread, beautifully presented on a rustic slate. As it was steak night, we simply had to try a couple of tender cuts of meat: succulent 10oz rump and 8oz gammon steaks, which came with field mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, dressed salad, onion rings and hand-cut chips cooked in beef dripping. The menu changes with the seasons, and favourites include the celebrated Manor Inn pie, fish specials from nearby Brixham, and a creamy chestnut mushroom stroganoff.
There are five beautifully refurbished en-suite guest rooms, dogs are very welcome, there is a pool table and a large car park
