Imagine the beautiful pea-green boat had landed at Teignmouth - the occupants would surely have felt at home in the 250-year-old, Georgian-fronted building that now houses The Owl and the Pussycat. In true 'Learesque' fashion, the door knob turns the wrong way, but once inside, you are made most welcome by owners Sandra and Mokhless Bouzayen and chef Ollie Harry.
We didn't dine on slices of quince or eat with runcible spoons, but instead chose from a menu that offers a selection of ethically and locally sourced produce - including fantastically fresh fish - at very good value for money. Animal welfare and the use of high-quality, traceable ingredients are core values here. The twice-baked Cornish blue cheese soufflé was delightfully fluffy and contrasted well with the rich Thai-style fishcakes with lime aioli. The pan-fried wild sea bass with potato and dill ratatouille and salsa verde was a perfect balance of flavours, and my Creedy duck, perfectly pink, must have required a rather large pan to prepare. I was then tempted by the chocolate and amaretto torte with honeycomb ice cream for dessert - rich but not heavy.
Local bottled ales, ciders and a great range of organic soft drinks are available, but we enjoyed a tipple from the comprehensive wine list before we left. Now, which way did that handle turn
