Surrounded by luscious gardens in the picturesque village of Shaldon, The Ness is a handsome pub housed in a Grade II listed Georgian property on the South West Coast Path. Offering different socialising areas, which are adorned with vintage boating memorabilia, it’s the perfect spot for whiling away the hours while taking in the stunning views over the Teign Estuary and beaches.
As part of the Hall & Woodhouse family – brewers of award-winning Badger beer – The Ness works hard to be all that a good local should: family- and dog-friendly, with relaxed but slick service, and an interesting food and drinks selection, while offering a real sense of community with regular lively events.
The menu features traditional favourites like steaks, burgers and beer-battered fish and chips as well as seasonal mains, healthy dishes and vegetarian and vegan options. We shared an indulgent baked Camembert to start, spiked with garlic and thyme and served with bread and crudités. My main course of honey-roasted ham with eggs, triple-cooked chips and piccalilli comes highly recommended, and my partner’s smoked haddock fishcakes were packed with flavour, served on a bed of spinach and kale with Provençale sauce. To round things off we shared a deliciously nostalgic favourite of Black Forest sundae while watching the boats coming and going along the river. The Ness is an idyllic spot for lazy days and laid-back nights with friends or family.
