Set in the beautiful village of Hennock, high above Teign Valley, this cosy, traditional pub dates back to the 16th century. The new owner Michael, who told us that the entrance bar had been standing since 1666, welcomed us warmly.
To start I indulged in fragrant crabcakes with chilli jam, while my companion enjoyed spicy nachos topped with oozing melted cheese and chunky salsa. The main menu is full of the kind of hearty, traditional dishes you crave after a rejuvenating walk in the countryside. We enjoyed a succulent steak with all the trimmings, and a Thai green curry with delightfully tender chicken. We can’t wait to return to try the popular Sunday roast. All of the produce is locally sourced, ensuring the highest levels of sustainability and freshness. For pudding we shared a caramel apple Betty – a scrumptious fruit tart doused in a delicious sweet sauce. To complement your meal you can choose from a large selection of ale and beer, as well as wine and spirits. Our table overlooked the enclosed beer garden and provided stunning views of the 40,000 acres of lush greenery that surround the pub. The idyllic effect was enhanced by songbirds fluttering past the window. Situated only two miles from Trenchford, Tottiford and Kennick reservoirs, this is the perfect spot from which to admire the charms of the countryside.
