Just a short drive from the centre of Taunton, nestled on the edge of the beautiful Blackdown Hills, The Lamb & Flag encapsulates everything that’s glorious about a classic country pub. The Grade II listed building oozes charm, with features such as the large wood-burning stove at its heart and the selection of board games adding to the character and cosy feel. Whether you’re looking for a romantic evening meal for two or a hearty Sunday lunch with friends and your four-legged companion after a walk in the hills, The Lamb & Flag is ideal. The bar offers a great choice of real ale from local Black Bear and Otter breweries, as well as an impressive range of gin and mixers. The thoughtful wine list has been complied by a local sommelier to complement the menu.
While the lunch menu offers some great-value country pub staples, including a very tempting ploughman’s to share, the evening menu doesn’t disappoint, with an excellent choice of meat and fish dishes and some interesting vegetarian alternatives. We tried the classic rump steak and couldn’t get enough of the roasted balsamic silverskin onions it came with – sweet, tangy and delicious. The hake with truffle oil mashed potatoes was perfectly cooked but still left room, importantly, for a dark chocolate tart with orange cream, which was silky smooth and incredibly moreish. It’s easy to see why The Lamb & Flag is so popular.
