What a treat to find a traditional pub with good-quality home-cooking in the centre of Taunton. Already a regular haunt for locals, The Kings Arms also attracts a lively clientele of workers, shoppers and visitors at lunchtime and couples and families in the evening. The pub has recently been refurbished, which, teamed with the sunny courtyard and easy parking, makes it wonderfully comfortable, accessible and stylish.
The menu includes hearty meals, plus snacks of jacket potatoes, salads and paninis and starters such as cheesy garlic bread, chicken wings and prawn cocktail; in all cases the portions are substantial and produce is sourced locally. I chose my main course from the daily specials board - an absolutely delicious pork loin with creamy apple sauce, fresh vegetables and piping-hot new potatoes. My partner found his butterflied chicken breast with Stilton sauce particularly succulent and tasty. The homemade puds included my favourite - bread and butter pudding. For beer aficionados there are three well-kept real ales on tap and for wine drinkers, a reasonably priced wine list. Those on a tight schedule can simply email or phone through their order and eat as soon as they walk through the door.
Landlady Beverley demonstrates that the simple concepts are the best - proper food and proper beer and wine in a proper pub. The Kings Arms' sister pub, The Bell Inn in Creech St Michael, offers the same fantastic concept in a country setting
