Tucked away in the lovely village of Wambrook is The Cotley Inn, a Grade II listed pub set on a beautiful family estate. The pub has retained many of its traditional features, and in the colder months the roaring fires, flagstone floors and exposed wooden beams create a warm, cosy atmosphere. On warmer days, guests spill out onto the south-facing terrace and fill the tables in the pleasant garden.
The quintessential country pub setting is delightful, but the real draw of The Cotley Inn is the excellent menu. Farm to fork is the overriding ethos here, and much of the produce is sourced from the surrounding farmland. The game on the menu is often from local shoots and the kitchen team goes to great lengths to source the best seasonal produce. I opted to start with a rich and creamy leek and potato soup. My wife chose equally well with the pub platter – a homemade pork pie, scampi, a Scotch egg and melting blue cheese croquettes. Craving a hearty main, my companion enjoyed succulent pheasant breast with fondant potatoes – a dish both beautifully presented and boasting perfectly complementing flavours. I contentedly tucked into a juicy beefburger, stuffed with Ogleshield cheese and oozing barbecue sauce. We left feeling extremely satisfied and are already planning a return trip.
