The Ship Inn

This cosy 15th-Century pub has achieved the perfect homely atmosphere with its quaint yet eclectic naval decor and roaring log fires. Add to this its picturesque location next door to a beautiful church and overlooking the River Dart and the entire dining experience becomes all the more enjoyable. Come the summer you will be able to make the most of the beautiful surroundings, with barbecues and paella and lobster evenings on the terrace.

The menu focuses on the area's locally produced meats and freshly caught seafood, which is in fact so fresh that the fish travels no more than 200 yards from boat to plate. The result? A delectable menu of hearty mains such as battered cod and chips or steak and Otter Ale pie. And for the vegetarians, a carbonara with a creamy sauce that features mushrooms and broccoli is a delicious twist on the original.

The dessert menu is invitingly titled 'naughty but nice', and includes such treats as a pannacotta with a hint of spiced rum, set off by a spiced apple purée, as well as a host of local ice creams. Also not to be missed is the opportunity to sample some of the real ales and quality wines on offer, either to add extra depth to the dining experience or to round off a thoroughly pleasurable visit.
