The Dartmoor Union, set in the beautiful Devonshire countryside, boasts an impressive list of accomplishments including an AA rosette and, according to the Good Pub Guide 2006, is Dining Pub of the Year. It boasts a beautiful terraced garden, which is open throughout the summer for drinks or alfresco dining.
Managed by Anthony Russell, The Dartmoor prides itself on providing a quality dining experience. Fresh bread is made every morning - the chef enjoys baking interesting varieties such as walnut, sweet chilli and carrot and cinnamon, served with locally sourced butter. It is obvious that attention to detail is the priority here and staff are friendly, well informed and highly trained. The menu changes regularly to keep up with seasonal changes in local produce, meaning that there is always a tempting selection of starters - choices include Thai marinated sirloin of beef flavoured with chilli and ginger, and pickled escabeche with horseradish cream.
Chargrilled Devonshire fillet steak topped with a steamed kidney suet pudding and a wild mushroom jus is just one example of what to expect from the chef's signature dishes. From the main menu, a choice of something light could be roast fillet of salmon with pickled saffron potatoes, baby spinach and almond pesto oil; or for the vegetarian diner, roasted vegetable cous cous topped with pan-fried halloumi and toasted pine nut kernels. To finish, the exotic fresh fruit pavlova with raspberry coulis, or apple parfait with calvados syrup might tempt your tastebuds, although a selection of West Country cheeses with granary toast and apple chutney is also an option.
The pub's microbrewery is not to be missed and there is also an extensive wine selection. Mr Russell has endeavoured to create a balance of grape varieties, regions and styles to be enjoyed alone or as the perfect complement to a meal. There is live music on Tuesday evenings and a number of other special events are regularly hosted. Check out an evening of live music with a pie and a pint, or one of the 'around the world' gourmet suppers.
