Devon's South Hams coastline has it all - beaches, sailing and surfing, coves to explore and great stretches of unspoilt coast perfect for an invigorating clifftop walk. It is in this setting that the Hope and Anchor occupies a prime spot looking out onto the serene waters of Hope Cove. The village is popular with summer visitors, but its great sense of community is evident all year round.

The maritime feel of this friendly inn extends to the menu, where freshly caught seafood is a speciality. Who could resist steamed mussels cooked in thyme, garlic, white wine and cream, served with a wedge of locally baked granary bread? And that's just a starter. The selection of mains includes creations such as the fillet of sea bass served on a crab and avocado mash with a pink peppercorn and dill butter and crab salad. Their 'From the Earth' selection lists mains such as cherry tomato, spinach and mozzarella pudding with salad and new potatoes - a vegetarian's delight. Scampi and chips, mixed cheese ploughman's and jacket potatoes are available for quick, simple lunches.

Hope Cove is one of those places you just don't want to leave - so it's just as well the Hope and Anchor has 11 en-suite bedrooms, most of which present impressive views of Bigbury Bay to the west.
