On the very doorstep of soothing country walks and rugged coastal paths, our journey's end came in the form of a crackling log fire and the very warmest of welcomes from this much loved hotel's new proprietors.

The smell of fresh baked bread wafted across the dining room and our starter of sea bass on crab cake with Champagne sauce was followed by a small, intensely flavoured artichoke soup with truffle. Local roast duckling followed, with Port wine and orange, slow roast beetroot and a horseradish potato rosti; beguiling flavours, soothing textures.
Devon country farm cheeses with grapes and chutney were presented on a platter. My wife indulged in a chocolate truffle terrine with bitter chocolate mousse, mocha and vanilla pod sauces and crushed praline. Coffee was rich and smooth; the truffles outstanding.
