Taylor's Restaurant must be one of Dartmouth's best kept secrets. You have no idea when you step through the modest doorway and climb the stairs that you will find such a classy restaurant, complete with delightful views over the picturesque harbour and quayside. With chandeliers and dark leather chairs, Taylor's sets the scene perfectly, not just for a beautiful meal, but a whole dining experience. Friendly and attentive staff and good music make for an atmosphere that is relaxed and intimate. Owners Pauline Shapland and Peter Shaw have truly created an elegant and inviting restaurant.
Peter is a chef of high credentials, having cooked for the Queen Mother and Prince Charles as well as at the House of Commons. His menu focuses on the freshly prepared, clean fresh flavours of locally-caught fish and seafood. The Start Bay crab salad (£7.50) is a fine example. Other starters include an asparagus and roasted red pepper salad with feta cheese, avocado oil and pine nuts (£6.75), and bang bang chicken with sweet chilli and sesame dressing (£6.50). The pan-fried fillet of sea bass on rocket with garlic, bacon, caperberries and sun-blush tomatoes (£16.75) was a sumptuous taste of the Mediterranean, and the sautéed scallops with a cream and crab sauce (£17.95) were succulent and tender. The accompanying dauphinoise potatoes and baby vegetables were cooked to perfection. From the dessert menu we shared a Lord Randall's sponge pudding with apricots, cinnamon and oranges served with a warm marmalade sauce and clotted cream (£5.95), although we were tempted by the West Country cheeses with quince jam and grapes (£6.50), and a glass of Taylor's 1999 ruby port (£2.90).
Good coffee and a sophisticated wine list add the finishing touches to a superb meal. Prices for wine range from £13.50 to £120 for a bottle of Laurent Perrier 1990 vintage Champagne. Our bottle of Chateau de la Charriere Bourgogne (2002) pinot noir (£24.95) complemented our meal perfectly. Also open for coffee and lunch, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy a Taylor's experience for yourself.
