For a taste of the Mediterranean without leaving the South West, look no further than Mezzé Restaurants. The team behind these popular eateries wanted to create family-oriented restaurants away from the city centre. Each restaurant is housed in an old country pub at the centre of its community, with outdoor areas for al fresco dining. The Ship & Castle, The Green Dragon and The Royal George all boast stunning landscaped gardens, beautifully lit by lanterns in the evening. If you're looking for a venue to host a private event, Mezzé Restaurants should be at the top of your list.
Both The Ship & Castle and The Warwick Arms have elegant boutique bedrooms making them an ideal base from which to explore the wider area.
All Mezzé restaurants boast reasonably priced menus with a range of authentic mezze as well as an à la carte menu of classic Mediterranean dishes. Mezze dishes cost just £5.25 each, or you can order three for £12.95. This sort of menu encourages informal, family-style dining and allows you to sample lots of different dishes. The mezze plates feature flavours from around the globe, with classic Mediterranean dishes like pork stifado served alongside aromatic North African options like harissa and coriander lamb curry. There are also dishes that proffer a nod to classic British cuisine, such as the Thatchers-soaked drunken pork, featuring slow-braised pork cooked in white wine, cider, cream and leeks, and the Mediterranean fish pie.
Vegetarians are well-catered for thanks to creative recipes like spiced vegetable borek, a deep-fried pastry parcel filled with potatoes and green peas, served with garlic and spinach yoghurt, but for something lighter, look to the chickpea and saffron-infused rice cooked with shallot butter. You can also choose to dine in the comfort of your own home with a selection of takeaway mezze.
From the main menu, you might like to try lamb shank slow-roasted in garlic, red wine and herbs served with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and creamy feta mashed potatoes, or a generous portion of chorizo, chicken and king prawn paella.
Mezzé Restaurants have made a concerted effort to give back to the community, selecting worthy charities each year to support through fundraising - this year's nominated charity is raising money for a new Linac cancer treatment machine. Mezzé also sponsors the Gloucestershire Cricket Board, bringing cricket coaching to schoolchildren across the South West.
With five successful community-centred restaurants already in full swing, and plans for a new restaurant in Clevedon under way, Mezzé Restaurants are quickly becoming one of the most popular dining out options in the South West.
