Finla Coffee

Set in a cosy corner of Plympton, just a short distance from bustling Plymouth, you’ll find Finla Coffee, a delightful coffee shop and bistro. This pleasant establishment is famed for its speciality coffee – try the signature blend, a medium-dark roast made with coffee from Brazil, El Salvador and India. Finla has diversified its offering since opening as a coffee shop two years ago, and branched out to become a bistro as well as a cafО, offering a concise but versatile menu on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Those visiting during the day can enjoy an array of scrumptious cooked breakfasts, bagels, teacakes and toasties. There are also a pleasing number of excellent vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options like the vegan breakfast, or avocado and poached egg atop sourdough with flaked almonds and smoked paprika.

I started my meal with melt-in-the-mouth crispy pork served on a flatbread and generously drizzled with yoghurt, coriander and chilli dressing. An avid meateater, I was nonetheless tempted into ordering a vegetarian main – butternut squash arancini with crispy kale and Parmesan. This excellent dish did not disappoint; exquisitely presented, the well-balanced flavours and textures perfectly complemented one another. A scrumptious vegan dessert of rich avocado and dark chocolate mousse topped with crispy caramelised bananas provided the perfect end to the meal. I concluded the evening sipping one of Finla’s famous bespoke coffees; I opted for the Italian, and thoroughly enjoyed the smooth, silky richness of the coffee coupled with the sweet warmth of amaretto liqueur.

The friendly, laid-back atmosphere at Finla Coffee makes this the perfect spot to gather with friends and family. During the day the sea of tables and a comfy sofa area give this charming venue a homely air, and the proprietors welcome those wishing to work with easy-access charging points and free Wi-Fi. Later on, this eclectic café is transformed into a trendy bistro, and alongside the evening menu they host regular themed events.
