This grade-II-listed coaching inn has long been associated with Charles Dickens; it is reputed that Dickens stayed at The Hare & Hounds whilst penning The Pickwick Papers - in fact, the landlord at the time was named Moses Pickwick. Today, this award-winning pub is a bustling hive of activity that's popular with locals and visitors alike.
The Hare & Hounds is not a restaurant that serves beer, nor a gastropub that offers more on the bill than on the plate. Instead, it is proud to call itself a great British pub, where service is as important as the quality of the food and drink. It comes as no surprise then, that proprietors Mark and Hayley Foster were finalists in the British Institute of Innkeeping's 'Licensee of the Year' category in 2011, and the pub was named 'Best Tenanted/Leased Pub' at the 2011 Great British Pub Awards. The menu incorporates fresh produce from local and regional suppliers, including outstanding organic beef from Neston Park Farm Shop, sausages from The Bath Sausage Shop, pies from Pieminister, fruit and vegetables from Lovejoys of Holt and fresh fish from Cornwall. The menu features wholesome, great value pub dishes, with plenty of choice for meat-lovers and vegetarians alike. The 10oz Neston Park rump steak, with salad, peas, onion rings and homemade chips is priced at just £12.95 and the handmade burgers, including The Classic, made using organic Neston Park beef, are available from just £8.25.
There are at least three Cask-Marque-accredited cask ales and an ever-changing guest ale on offer, as well as more than 20 affordable wines from around the world, Rainforest Alliance Certified Lavazza Tierra Arabica coffee and plenty of soft drinks. As former Fuller's training managers, Mark and Hayley are only too aware of the importance of staff standards, and this is clearly evident amongst the team at The Hare.
