Nestled in the beautiful Exmoor village of Bampton, Bridge House delivers exactly what it says it will at the top of its menu: proper good food. I started with a restorative sweet potato and ginger soup, while my companion chose the earthy potted beef and bacon served with homemade piccalilli. For my main course, I had the succulent roasted Creedy Carver chicken breast, and my companion opted for the Welsh rarebit with Devon cider from the brunch menu. The presentation of each dish was unfussy and refi ned, and we were struck by the robust yet well-balanced fl avours of the home-grown ingredients. After admiring the potted herbs, berry bushes and fruit trees on a stroll around the walled garden, we went back inside for dessert. We couldn't resist the temptation of the rhubarb tart, and lemon polenta cake. Home-baked, delicate and delicious, these desserts rounded off a superb meal in a beautiful setting
